CompTracker Redesign

UX/UI Prototype | October 2023
Project Overview
CompTracker is a website used by Medical Radiation Sciences Radiography students at McMaster University to keep track of their radiography cases and experiences throughout their clinical placement.
BACKGROUND INFO
Throughout their clinical placement of 4-8 months, students learn different radiographic protocols and complete a certain amount of  skills assessments to pass their clinical placement.

There are five different record types students keep track of during clinical:

Logbook Cases
Radiography cases students witness during placement in preparation for testing
Experiences
Non-mandatory radiography cases students witness during placement
Technical Assessements
Radiographic skills assessments and competencies completed in order to pass clinical placement
Forms
Administrative tasks completed by students (ex: Weekly Reflections, Image Critiques, etc.)
Attendance
Reported days of absence during clinical
User Research
A survey was conducted amongst 17 radiography students to take note of their experience using the website.

Through this survey I noted that:
  1. The website was aesthetically unpleasing
  2. How users currently sort their cases and their user workflow
  3. Users found the website difficult to navigate
Current Design Flaws
  • 2. Messy Layout of Record Entry Form
  • 3. Aesthetically Unpleasing

TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGIES

  • Rather tech savvy
  • Familiar with CompTracker website and its functions from their previous clinical placement

GOALS

  • To create records into CompTracker in an efficient manner. This includes inputting log cases, forms and clinical experiences.

FRUSTRATIONS

  • Layout of website is confusing, visually unpleasing and disorganized
  • Difficulty locating cases logged, and prone to mistakes when using the website to track cases

NEEDS

  •  Keep track of current progress during clinical and what tests/competencies need to be completed
  • Needs to communicate with clinical coordinator

DESIRES

  • To clearly view overall progress quickly at a glance
  •  To be able to access details on cases/tests if necessary in convenient manner
LAYOUT AND Information Architecture
With the current design flaws in mind, the main two concerns I had were:

  1. Categorization of Information and Website Layout - What would be the most effective way to group the categories of records (logbook cases, skills assessments, and forms)? How will the importance of each category affect the general layout of the website?
  2. Function to Create Records - What is the most effective way for the user to input their records? What actions would the user take in order to input this information in an efficient manner?
Part 1 - Catergorization of Information and LAyout
Old Design Information Layout:
  1. Forms
  2. Attendance
  3. Logbook, Skills, Competencies, Weekly Assessments and Experiences

New Design Information Layout:

  1. Technical Assessments (Skills/ Competencies) - tests to pass clinical placement
  2. Logbooks - cases witnessed and recorded daily
  3. Experiences and Forms (Image Critiques, Weekly Assessments) - miscellaneous administrative tasks not mandatory to clinical placement completion
Throughout clinical, students mainly record logbook cases they witness everyday, followed by their skills and competencies. Forms and attendance records are inputted by the student 1-3 times a month depending on their absences. This makes the new design's information layout ideal for the user.

Part 2 - Creating records FUNCTION
Old Design User-Workflow:
  • All record types were not sorted, instead was put into one list for the user to select from
  • User had to enter "Forms" in a separate worflow from other record types

New Design User-Workflow:

  • Prioritizes Logbook entry function, since it is the most often used function for students
  • Users can enter case by Date or Record Type (Logbook, Technical Assessments or Administrative) and add descriptions to their cases if required
Generate Reports Feature
This feature would allows students to generate a pdf form of their clinical progress for each respective category of information.
